Rotation #3 & 4: Internal Medicine

November 2nd, 2008

Internal medicine is one of our core rotations we do for 5 months out of the year.  It’s a busy rotation with long days….some days longer than other.  The past two months flew by faster than ever.  By the end of the 8 weeks I really was ready for my alarm to NOT go off at 5:01 every morning…..and ready for a break from some of the 30 hour shifts!  Even with all of that, it’s amazing to think back at how much I’ve learned in the past few weeks.  It all starts off being scary writing an order for Tylenol and by the end of the rotation at least having enough confidence to feel comfortable writing basic orders from start to finish with a little more authority!

The end of the first month I was lucky enough to end with a “golden weekend” and got  a chance to go to Yellowstone for the weekend with Kim and Brian.  More on my trip in the next blog…

Rotation #2 Pediatrics

October 21st, 2008

Our pediatrics month we spend in Portland at Emanual Children’s hospital.  It’s a great place to learn because there is such a high volume of kids that come through there.  That also makes the month exhausting, both emotionally and physically.  Throughout the month I met some of the strongest families on the planet.  I really can not imagine the sacrifices that some of these families make when they have sick children.

Imagine:  Family with 4 children, the four year old hasn’t been eating as well over the last month and also complaining of  “my vision is funny”  You have been going to the doctor because she hasn’t been able to eat without vomiting so you get referred to a GI specialist.  Finally after a month of trying new things and many tests and lab work the doctors get a MRI of the brain…only to find out there is a tumor….all this a week after your house is sold and you are living in a hotel with your family of four while looking for a place to live across the country….oh yeah did I mention that the mother was pregnant with her 5th…three weeks from being due.   I really can’t express the strength of these families that go through these difficult times.

In the past this rotation has been one of the least favorite of the FMSW residents but I thought it was great.  I also met some amazing people that are at OHSU for their pediatrics residency.  I even got a chance to make it to a concert at the Oregon Zoo with some of them one evening after work.  I think I enjoyed the rotation so much becasue I really enjoyed the people I worked with…I’ll have to remember that when I decide where I want to work someday!

Cloudy Beach Weekend

Rotation #1 OB

October 14th, 2008

I guess July is a popular month to have babies.  For most of the month I didn’t go home without delivering two babies per day!  The learning curve was steep and I really got thrown into things.  I was the only intern on OB that month and it seemed that my senior was always post call when I was there and vice versa.  I think I was still in shock from all of the new information thrown at me but over all it was a wonderful month.

I’m looking forward to my next OB rotation, which I’m guessing is a good thing!

Matt and I did get a chance to take my “golden weekend” and go the the beach.  Unfortunately we picked the one weekend that was cloudy.  We still had a good time and Dorito loved the ocean!  He met lots of dog friends and played in the water.  There were even some people riding horses down the beach.  We also flew our super easy octopus kite.  It was a well deserved relaxing weekend!

Life as an Intern…the beginning

October 14th, 2008

Hello all.  Since I’m so far away from everyone I thought I’d start a little blog to tell you about things that are going on in my life.  I’d like to start from the beginning of my life as an intern…some of it seems so far away now but late is better than never.

Internship started with a two week orientation and lots of sitting around “getting to know each other and the system”  Most of it was pretty boring but there were a few highlights.  Dr. Swenson, a cardiologist, at SWMC took us on a little hike…14 miles later I’d say we were pretty “bonded” with each other.

We also had a chance to brush up on our Life support skills, boy we can all intubate dummies like champs now!  Neonatal resuscitation was fine and dandy too but the thought of having that responsibility on real babies seems overwhelming!

It was a great two weeks but it all went by to fast, life in the real world starts soon…..the day all doctors remember July 1st of each year…first day as a real live doctor!
